Using Gale Virtual Reference Library

Gale Virtual Reference Library allows you to browse a number of different topics and find useful information about them from their online reference collection.

Reference books are an integral part of any library, and a great jumping-off point for research, as well as a place to find specific facts and information. Reference books include encyclopedias, multidisciplinary and series eBooks.

GVRL makes browsing the reference e-books easy. On the homepage, you can simply browse by subject:

 

You can also choose to complete a basic or advanced search to search the available reference books for information related to a specific subject:

Get the PDF

Gale provides several ways to get a chapter. 

  1. This is the most direct way to get a chapter on your device. Select the download option and choose from your devices apps that can read PDF documents
  2. Email the document to yourself.
  3. Save to your OneDrive.
  4. Save to your Google Drive.

Get it on Your iPad or iPhone

On iPhones and iPads you can use your browser, Safari, to search and use Gale.You should note that Gale does not transfer entire books to your device but you can download multiple individual chapters.

Follow the steps below to load documents into Books:

  1. Search and find a document that you’d like in Gale.
  2. Click the Download button. This button is only available at the document level.
  3. A new browser window will open with the PDF version of the document.
  4. You’ll see a “Open in Books” button beneath the address bar; tap it. If you don’t see it, tap your screen.
  5. The document will load in Books and become part of your PDFs bookshelf and you can use it anytime!

Get it on Your Kindle or Nook

Depending on which type of Kindle or Nook you own, you may be able to search and use Gale from your device. Regardless you can use the following method to move Gale documents to it. You should note that Gale does not transfer entire books to your device but you can download multiple individual chapters.

The most reliable way to put Gale documents on your Kindle or Nook is to use file transfer:

  1. Search and find a document that you’d like in Gale.
  2. Click the Download button. This button is only available at the document level set to Text View.
  3. Save the file to an appropriate place on your hard drive like My Documents/Documents or your Desktop.
  4. Connect your Kindle/Nook to your computer via its USB cable.
  5. Copy the file from your hard drive to the appropriate place on your Kindle/Nook. If you’re unsure where to put it, consult your instruction manual.
  6. Your document should now appear on your device!

Note: Amazon offers the ability to email PDF documents directly to your Kindle.
